Kathleen Broglio, DNP, ANP-BC, ACHPN, CPE, FPCN, May 25, 2018, The well-recognized problem of opioid misuse, abuse and diversion also exists within the population of people with cancer. The public and personal health consequences may be just as devastating in this population. Therefore, all clinicians involved in the care of patients with cancer pain should be able to provide effective pain relief while minimizing risks of misuse, abuse and medication diversion. The first step to being able to provide this care is to conduct an opioid risk assessment to identify those at risk for opioid misuse.
